A pair of hand-painted ceramic elephants from China, each caparisoned with a tasselled saddle-cloth and a flat seat on its back, in the traditional elephant garden-seat form. One larger in green and red, one smaller in blue and rust, both on moulded plinths.
Caparisoned elephants are a chinoiserie mainstay — auspicious, ornamental and endlessly collectable. As a graduated pair they make a strong grandmillennial grouping on a shelf or hearth.
