A pair of Washington Old Willow serving plates, made in England, in the blue and white Willow pattern — pagoda, willow, bridge and birds printed in cobalt on a white ground. Sold as a set of two, for serving or for a plate wall.
The Willow pattern is the most enduring of the English chinoiserie transferwares, in production since the late 18th century, and Washington Old Willow is one of the standard lines carrying it. Cobalt under the glaze is smooth to the touch and does not fade with washing.
