A Real Old Willow lidded tureen, made in England, in the blue and white Willow pattern. A round covered serving dish with two handles and a domed lid, printed all over in cobalt with the Willow scene of pagoda, willow, bridge and birds. A centrepiece for a laid table or a dresser.
The Willow pattern is the most enduring of the English chinoiserie transferwares, in production since the late 18th century, and a covered tureen is the piece a Willow service was built around. Cobalt under the glaze is smooth to the touch and does not fade with washing.
