A large hand-painted Italian faience soup tureen on a matching footed underplate. The lidded bowl and stand carry moulded acanthus fluting brushed in coral, ochre and violet, yellow beaded bands, and a hand-painted floral bouquet of roses and garden flowers across the front. Twin scroll handles and an urn finial.
Hand-painted tin-glazed earthenware is the Italian maiolica tradition — the relief is moulded, but the colour and the central bouquet are laid on by hand, so the piece reads as a one-off. A tureen of this scale works as a centrepiece as much as a serving dish.
