A Myott Son and Co cake plate in the Willow pattern, made in England. A square plate with cut corners and two moulded lug handles, printed in cobalt blue with the classic Willow scene — the pagoda, the willow tree, the bridge, the boat and the pair of birds — inside a geometric trellis border. Blue and white for afternoon tea or a plate wall.
The Willow pattern is the most enduring of the English chinoiserie transferwares, in production since the late 18th century, and a squared handled plate like this was made as a bread-and-butter or cake plate for the tea table.
