A Real Old Willow serving platter, made in England, in the blue and white Willow pattern with a rust-brown line to the border. The full Willow scene is here — the pagoda, the willow tree, the bridge, the boat and the two birds — printed in cobalt on a white ground, on a large scalloped oval. A dresser or wall piece as much as a serving dish.
The Willow pattern is the most enduring of the English chinoiserie transferwares, in production since the late 18th century, and Real Old Willow is one of the standard lines carrying it. Cobalt under the glaze is smooth to the touch and does not fade with washing.
