A lidded Bavarian porcelain jar vase by J. Konester, in the temple-jar shape: a rounded body drawing in to a domed cover topped with a gold acorn finial. The pale sage-green ground is hand decorated with a spray of stylised grey flowers picked out in gold, with gilt bands at the neck and foot.
Bavaria was the porcelain heartland of southern Germany, and the covered ginger jar — borrowed from Chinese porcelain and kept in production by Bavarian factories through the 20th century — was made as a mantel piece to be seen from the front. The gilding is applied last and fired low, which is why on pieces of this age it is the first thing to soften.
