A large Delft blue and white lidded vase by Boch of Holland. A fluted baluster body painted with cartouche panels of hand-drawn flower sprays over a scrolled cobalt ground, with a domed cover topped by a guardian-lion (foo dog) finial. Marked Boch on the base. Height 40 cm.
Blue-and-white Delftware carries the Dutch reading of Chinese export porcelain, and the lion finial is the guardian dog that sat at temple and doorway as a symbol of protection. According to the mark, this pattern was used across the earlier-to-mid twentieth century.
