A vintage lidded porcelain urn in the ginger jar shape: a rounded body drawing in to a domed cover with a finial, painted by hand with sprays of roses and garden flowers on a cream ground, with gilded lines at the rim, foot and lid. A mantel piece that reads as decor on its own.
The lidded urn is one of the oldest shapes in European decorative porcelain, borrowed from Chinese ginger jars and kept in production by German and Bavarian factories through the 20th century. Hand painted floral work with gold banding is the signature of that tradition, and the gilding is applied last and fired at a lower temperature, which is why it is always the first thing to show wear.
