A vintage blue and white porcelain vase painted with a fine lattice pattern in cobalt over a white ground, with banded borders at the neck and foot. Unmarked.
Blue and white lattice work is the most widely copied of the Chinese export patterns, carried into European and Asian factories alike because cobalt is the one pigment that survives a high-temperature glaze firing without shifting colour. That is why the blue always sits under the glaze, smooth to the touch, rather than on top of it.
