A Spode dinner plate in the Blue Italian pattern, made in England. The centre carries the well-known Italianate landscape — classical ruins, a river and cattle under a wide sky — printed in cobalt blue, framed by the Imari scroll-and-flower border. Blue and white transferware for a place setting or a plate wall.
Spode introduced Blue Italian in 1816 and has kept it in production ever since, which makes it one of the most recognised of all English blue and white patterns. Cobalt under the glaze is smooth to the touch and does not fade with washing, which is why these plates survive in daily use.
