A large Boch lidded ginger jar vase in the Vieux Rhodes pattern, made in Belgium. A baluster body with a domed cover topped by a blue and white foo-dog finial, hand decorated in the Iznik manner — cobalt blue, rust and green flowering stems on a cream ground — with lappet borders at the foot. A statement mantel or floor piece.
Vieux Rhodes is Boch's take on the old Rhodian (Iznik) palette, where the strong blues and terracotta reds of Ottoman pottery are carried onto Belgian earthenware. A lidded jar of this size, with a foo-dog finial, is the grandest form in the range.
